As I sat upstairs waiting to talk to Steve Madden, a crowd of girls screamed from the shoe department of Nordstrom’s in the Houston Galleria waiting (somewhat) patiently to meet, greet and get their purchases signed by the famous shoe designer. I couldn’t help but think of how many Steve Madden purchases I have made… I mean, I pretty much lived in his shoes all through high school and college. What I love about Steve Maddens are that they are tall, comfortable and well made – three things I look for when buying shoes.
He is running behind, so I have less than 5 minutes to talk to him or else I am sure that crowd downstairs would turn into an angry mob. Now, let me emphasize that I am by no means a professional interviewer – or even a good one at that and it doesn’t matter how much I prepare because I will always be nervous. This particular interview went by so fast that I felt like I was just shooting out questions. I definitely wanted to know about 7b, his collaboration with Kari Sigerson (formerly of Sigerson Morrison). He told me that this is new territory for a Steve Madden shoe – it is more expensive (prices range from $250-675) and will be carried by high end retailers such as Barney’s, Bergdorf’s, Neimans and Net-a-Porter. The line is similar to what used to be Sigerson Morrison – lots of sandals, gladiators and booties in an array of neutral and metallic tones.
